Best UTV for beginners - what to rent on your first side by side trip

If you have never driven a side by side before, picking the right machine matters more than most people think. The best beginner UTV is not the most powerful one in the fleet. It is the one that gives you enough room to learn the controls, build confidence, and actually enjoy the trail without the machine working against you.

At Glamis Dunes Rentals, we have helped a lot of first-time riders figure out where to start. This page covers what to look for, which machines we would point you toward, and a few things worth knowing before you head out.

The honest pros and cons

Booking a beginner-rated machine on your first ride is the right call. Here is why, and what you trade off.

Why it is the right call

What you give up

  • Less top-end performance and speed
  • Not as exciting for experienced riders
  • Some beginner machines have less suspension travel
  • You may feel like you want more power by the end of the day

Trip types that suit beginner riders

Not every trail or trip type is right for a first-time ride. Here is where to start.

Mixed terrain trail rides.

Moderate dirt trails with a mix of flat sections and gentle climbs. The right environment to learn throttle control and braking without surprises.

Half-day rentals.

A half-day is the right duration for a first ride. It gives you enough time to get comfortable without wearing you out. You can always book a full day on your next visit.

Family and group trail days.

The Can-Am Commander MAX XT and X3 Max DS Turbo are both good picks when the family or  group includes passengers who have not ridden before.

Recommended beginner machines from our fleet

These are the machines we recommend for first-time riders. Each one is forgiving enough to learn on while still being genuinely fun to drive.

Can-Am Maverick X3 DS Turbo

  • 2 seats
  • 120 HP
  • Top pick

Enough power to feel exciting, smooth enough to stay in control. Most new riders are comfortable within the first 20 minutes.

Can-Am Maverick X3 DS Turbo

Can-Am Commander XT

  • 2 seats
  • $499/day + $49/day required Adventure Shield
  • Most forgiving

The easiest machine in our lineup to learn on. Less HP means more forgiveness if you gas it too hard in a corner.

Can-Am Commander MAX XT

  • 4 seats
  • $599/day + $49/day required Adventure Shield
  • Best for groups

The most beginner-friendly 4-seater we carry. Stable, comfortable, and easy to drive at a relaxed pace.

Can-Am Commander MAX XT

Can-Am Maverick X3 Max DS Turbo

  • 4 seats
  • 120 HP
  • Room for four

The same ride as the 2-seat X3 DS Turbo, with room for three passengers. Good for beginner groups who want comfort and stability.

The X3 RS Turbo RR, X3 XRS Turbo RR and Maverick R are not recommended for first-time riders. All three are great machines, but not on a first ride. Start lower and step up on your next visit.

What a beginner machine rental costs

Beginner-friendly machines like the Commander XT ($499/day + $49/day required Adventure Shield) and X3 DS Turbo ($699/day + $49/day required Adventure Shield) are generally the most affordable options in our fleet. Pricing depends on the model, duration, and whether you are booking a weekday or weekend. For a full breakdown, see our UTV rental pricing explained page.

FAQS

What is the best UTV for a beginner?

For most first-time riders, the Can-Am Maverick X3 DS Turbo is the best starting point. It has enough power to be fun but handles predictably and gives you time to react. If you have never been off-road at all, the Commander XT is even more forgiving. For groups or families, the Can-Am Commander MAX XT is the most approachable 4-seat option we carry.

Do I need experience to rent a side by side UTV?

No. You do not need prior experience to rent from us. We go over the controls with you before you head out and match you to a machine that suits your level. Just let us know when you book that it is your first time and we will take care of the rest.

Is a side by side UTV safe for beginners?

Yes, on the right machine and with the right approach. Every rental includes a roll cage, five-point harness, and a helmet. We walk every renter through basic controls before they leave.

What is the easiest side by side UTV to drive?

In our fleet, the Can-Am Commander XT and Commander MAX XT are the easiest to drive. Both have smooth, manageable power and a stable, forgiving chassis.

How long does it take to learn to drive a side by side?

Most people feel comfortable within the first 15 to 20 minutes on a beginner-friendly machine. The controls are straightforward. The main adjustment is getting used to off-road braking and throttle control.
